Inspired by the effort to get out and enjoy unfamiliar places
(and the rarity of leisure time to do it), the
Trail Trip Planner

is a Web Map which helps trail users plan their routes. It displays trails and calculates distances, climbing, and expected duration in a Google Maps interface. Click on the icons at the middle of the trail segments to choose your route. The total distance, amount of vertical gain, and estimated time are updated at the bottom of the map. You can enter your estimated pace (flat-land and vertical) at the left.

(Trail segments have a little bit of climbing and a lot of descending in one direction, and a lot of climbing and little descending in the other direction. The code determines which direction you are going [after clicking on the second segment]. The algorithm treats downhill travel at the same rate as flat ground travel. This is a good estimate for hiking, but needs to be changed for cycling [forthcoming]. This is a small fraction of the trails of the Diablo area. If there is interest in this web application, we will add all of the trails in the maps linked to below.)

We're also thinking about pushing all the trail data out for digital use in Google Earth (6.5 MB) or to load onto individual's GPS units. (Need Google Earth?)

As always, your feedback is encouraged:

Mount Diablo, etc.
Los Vaqueros, etc.
